But there's no use trying to justify what happened. She doesn't have the chance to before Elias keeps talking. His game plan is already set, and her thoughts of trying to protect Jon from his own involvement in the incident fades under the coming onslaught of information.
She can see it, like his memories are her memories.
Agnes has seen terrible things before. She's watched houses burn with people still trapped inside. Seen the flesh sear off of a body. Breathed in anguish and despair. She feeds from it. But these things don't bring her pleasure.
And seeing this pain, this humiliation, it makes her feel sick. Things that she can't properly understand or reconcile are just inside of her now. Inside of her head. Their feelings are hers, now.
Her fingers are clenching too tightly around her coffee cup as the coffee boils and boils and boils.]
